First, find a good stylist that will listen to you. Be clear with them it is your intention to grow your hair out to a long length. Listen to them when they tell you the basic hair care rules. Even though you are growing it out you will still need the ends trimmed occasionally to keep the hair healthy.
Also, stop washing your hair every day! That straps the natural oils and protectants and can lead to split ends. Consider using a dry shampoo, I switched to one and it has made a huge difference.
Find and begin using a “no tangle” brush. Again we are trying to avoid losing hair.
Why are white women so hard to date?
Next, find some biotin and keratin supplements and take the recommend amount. Also consider vitamin E.

Having began my transition about a year I have some knowledge of this situation.
Get either a satin/sateen pillowcase or a satin sleep bonnet or both. Cotton or linen pillowcases can snag your hair while you sleep causing hairs to break off.
